This website it is part one of our Adventure. It is a chronicle of construction of a 36’ GRP SPRAY sailboat by Bruce Roberts Yacht Design. It is also about our effort to make it sail fast, save as much money as possible, and always stay motivated. It is also about of what we did wrong, and of how we fixed it. It is of how “WE” built this boat, but it is not of “HOW TO” built this particular boat.
This site is not about our project only. We willingly add info about other Sprays and their owners or builders, around the World.
What makes us want to build a boat? I don’t mean a dinghy or small weekender boat. I mean a real cruising boat for two or occasionally for four. It is certainly money. From my experience, I know that the labour is the major price factor, doesn’t matter what kind of project is undertaken. I’ve saved a lot of money building my own home or renovated the older one. I also know that in most cases it is cheaper, and faster to build something from scratch instead of fixing it, changing or renovating. Of course there are a lot of exceptions, and each single project must be carefully taken into consideration. The very high price tags of new boats, and big unknowns with old vessels convinced me to take the challenge, and start the project of my life.
Construction began November 17, 2001 with the package from Bruce Roberts, contains plans of Spray 36’. The pictures on this site are current as of November 2001. All pictures and monthly reports you can find by links from Boat Journal table. Originally our site was on Geocities free server, but a lot of visitors complained about limited speed, limited bandwidth traffic and annoying advertisings. By the end of 2004 I opened my new page, but I decided to leave old photos on Geocities server, making only links from the new site.
Very often I have been asked of how I learned to build a boat like this. The answer is from books, magazines, Internet, TV, newsgroups, and so on. Very often I was stealing ideas from another websites, or from Boat Shows.
I do not have a well-equipped workshop – I wish to have it. I had only a few basic tools when I started working. All expenses for new tools have been added to a boat budget. Still my basement, and my garage are not full of tool treasures.
My background as an electrical engineer, and my current position as a product developer -mechanical designer help a lot. My experience with building, and renovating homes bear the interest as well. This project is the biggest project of my life. I’d never worked on this kind of tasks before. Every step, and every task was new to me. Not always everything was done perfectly, and it is almost impossible to get everything look like not home made. Compromises always must be taken between cost time, and possibilities. This project is to build a sail boat – cruiser, not a piece of fine furniture. I want to launch this boat as soon as possible, not looking onto mirror finished hull.
Mostly, our website is updated once a month. I’m adding new pictures with descriptions to this site periodically. Come back, and visit us again. This site is a way of sharing the experience, but it is not limited to my project only. Here you can find also information about another Sprays, and their builders.
The boat is named “SeaGoat” for my lovely wife Barbara. Her Zodiac sign is a Capricorn or a SeaGoat, meaning horned goat.
